Researchers reported in Obstetrics & Gynecology that more than one in five women said that they are unable to afford menstrual hygiene products. They instead have to use cloth, rags, tissues and other self-made items. Period products are not covered by government grocery-assistant programs and are thus taxed at a high rate, and sometimes even considered a luxury itemThrough the underlying stigma of period, people often assume that only women can get their period. However, not all women menstruate and not all people who menstruate are women. The way that periods have been gendered as only a women’s issue, companies make the mistake in advertising to only women and often forget about people who identify otherwise. Transgender and non-binary people are then faced with more discrimination and violence, thus the need to de-stigmatize periods and improve access to period products is essential.
