Researchers reported in Obstetrics & Gynecology that more than one in five women said that they are unable to afford menstrual hygiene products. They instead have to use cloth, rags, tissues and other self-made items. Period products are not covered by government grocery-assistant programs and are thus taxed at a high rate, and sometimes even considered a luxury item.
